A German man weighing 230 kilograms has died after refusing to go to the zoo for an X-ray because he was too heavy for machines designed for humans, The Daily Bild has reported.
"It sounded like they were trying to wind us up," Thomas Lessmann's widow Petra told the paper.
Complaining he was feeling ill and frequently losing consciousness, the 51-year-old went to a clinic in Eppendorf, near Hamburg in northern Germany, which referred him to the nearby Hagenbeck Zoo.
His pride wounded, he refused to go and died 13 days afterwards, the paper said.
The cause of death was unclear.
A spokeswoman for the clinic said that Mr Lessmann was entitled to the same treatment as anyone else but added, "The upper weight limit for machines in human medicine is around 200 kilograms."

First and foremost, R.I.P. to Mr. Lessman. That being said, how ignorant can you be? Every so often (and yes, "every" is proper grammar), I hear of a person dying or getting injured through their own behavior and/or lack of common sense and it all-but completely depreciates any sympathy I may have for them. One, how can you let yourself be so fucking lazy and irresponsible in all aspects to become so unhealthy. Trust me, we Fixers all have our vices and definitely know how to get down, but we keep ourselves in check. 507 Pounds, really??...Maybe he has some sort of "condition" and if that truly is the case, completely forget everything I have said since R.I.P. From the way this story sounds, I highly doubt that is the case. Any conditions this guy may have had were likely the negative results of his personal carelessness. This man was offered a chance to possibly save his own life, or at least deter its end for a little while...an exception was willing to be made here to pencil Mr. Lessman in the appointment book between the kangaroo and elephant check-ups. Probably would have gotten eaten there anyway, lotta meat on those bones.
Moral of the story my fellow Fixers: An apple a day keeps the doctor away.
