Record Store Day

I thought it was pretty interesting to recently discover that there is one specific day on our calendar to honor all local, independently owned music shops across the country. In a culture that is riddled with ridiculous amounts of corporate dominance in almost every industry thinkable, it is endearing to learn that the little guy is getting a nod. That day is coming up. APRIL 18th, 2009 will be the 3rd ever Record Store Day in the U.S. (It is annually the 3rd Saturday in April)

To be recognized nationally on Record Store Day, a store must have at least 50% of sales dedicated to music-related merchandise. Not many stores or young entrepreneurs are gambling with the idea of going up against new music technology like iPods or satellite radio, so its easy to see how music stores have begun to phase out in our generation. But that's not to say we should forget our roots. Everyone probably remembers that first CD they ever bought (Hootie and the Blowfish- Cracked Rear View) and probably listened to it on a fossilized cinder block of a boom box.

Participating stores (over 700) are all over the country and includes Lexington's very own CD Central. Other Kentucky locations include Ear x-tacy and Underground Sounds in Louisville. The venues will feature live performances, interviews, and exclusive album releases only found at local indie sites. Many fans that attended My Morning Jacket in Louisville, KY at Waterfront Park last summer will be thrilled to know that they are featuring some selections from that show and some picks from a performance at Ear X-tacy on their upcoming release.

Now, I know that the aforementioned date is also being anticipated by many Fixers and Followers for other reasons... err, one other reason (and it is a good one). But need I remind you, exclusive releases from My Morning Jacket, The Black Keys, Cold War Kids, Bob Dylan, Modest Mouse, Radiohead, and Slayer (and many others) could mean only one thing for the planning of the most dignified debacle of a Keeneland tailgate: we need to get sober drivers.

Support your local music store. Check the website to find participating locales near you.
