With spring break literally right around the corner I thought it a good time to introduce a new mini-series of posts that will slowly take away credibility from the site instead of doing it in one large post as I normally do. Today boys and girls we are going to talk about house parties. You throw them, I love them, and Dubs crashes them.
While they may on the surface just be a wild group of drunk people defiling some person's home, there is a science to a good house party and I feel that more people should know the specifics of what can turn a mild mannered get together into an excuse for the police to use excessive force.
For the first lesson I thought we would start out slow, but with a very important topic: music. The music during the party can not only define, but also ruin the mood. Imagine walking into a house. After the door opens, even sometimes before, the first thing that should be hitting your senses is the music. If you walk in and a bunch of guys are sitting watching the game listening to Creedence it puts you in a mood just the same as walking into a house full of girls dancing to The Chronic would have you in an entirely different state of mind. Point being, that the music will have an effect on the energy and outcome of the party. Just remember that before you go letting the Turk DJ your party.
Any recommendations depend on the location and setting. The right music and the party local will need to work together. For example:
Houseboat - Some Jimmy Buffet is going to work.
Backyard - Better hit up some DMB.
Dance floor - I suggest you ask the Kid Curry to give you the fix there.
All this being said you can still have a great party with terrible tunes or in complete silence. No advice given is absolute. However, a certain song or hook can take you back to the place you first heard it or where you were jamming it at. And the music will be something that you and others recall months afterwards. I can still remember as a young Kyle rolling over to the Pecker's Mansion only to hear some OAR blasting. You know what it was the right music, the parties were always rocking, and that's what everybody remembers.
So take heart young fixers of the world for some day you too will be able to destroy a friends house and blame it on the party. Everybody have a good Spring Break and stay safe.
*One last thing to remember, "You make the spot the spot don't make you."
*Sigh, memories of 432 1/2 Woodland Avenue...
