And We Thought a Washing Machine was Cheap...

I'm sure most yourdalyfixers are aware that a Minor League baseball player was traded to another Independent League team for 10 Maple Baseball bats last May. That's right, 10 Baseball bats. A real life example of Will Ferrell's Semi Pro in which Jackie Moon trades a washing machine for Ed Monix in hopes to be able to stick with the NBA during the merger. In all seriousness this real life example of John Odom being traded from the Calgary Vipers to the Laredo Broncos ended in a tragedy. ESPN.com reported today that John Odom was found dead in Georgia on November 5, 2008 at the age of 26 from a reportedly accidental overdose of heroin, methamphetimine, benzylpiperazine, and alcohol. Not my cocktail of choice. I read this article and it is a sad story of a guy who didn't have a great childhood and was kicked off his highschool baseball team. Things looked up for him when he made the team as a walk on at Talahassee Community College. After getting caught in the whirlpool of the minors he worked his was back to less-than-mediocre status and was traded for 10 Maple Bats last May. His former teammates all expressed remorse, but admittantly said they were sorry they weren't suprised when hearing the news. On the bright side of things, Ripley's Believe It or Not heard of the trade for bats and death of Odom and gave the Calgary Vipers $10,000 to donate to their charity in return for an exhibit in a Ripley's museum. John Odom, this Bud's for you.
